What Others Think

A lot of people say “You shouldn’t care what others think.” I want to look at both sides of that. I want to show you why you shouldn’t care AND why you SHOULD care.

First of all, why should you not care?

If you are walking in God’s will for you and doing what He is telling you to do, then you shouldn’t necessarily care if others agree with it or not or whether they really like it or not. You’re doing what you are supposed to do, and that is what matters most.

As a follower of Christ, you should not be ashamed of the Gospel of Christ (Romans 1:16). You should preach the Word with boldness (Acts 4:29, 28:31). You are the salt of the earth and a city on a hill (Matthew 5:13-16). You are to go into the highways and the byways to share the Gospel with everyone (Luke 14:23). It doesn’t matter if they get mad at you or persecute you. So in that sense, you shouldn’t care what others think.

Now, why should you care what others think?

A professional image- Whether you like it or not or agree with it or not, people judge based on outside appearances. Whatever God has called you to do, whatever gifts He has given you, you should make yourself presentable to others. Personal hygiene and being dressed for the occasion need to be focused on. When you make yourself presentable and have a professional look about you, people will pay more attention and be more likely to receive what you have.

You should care what others think, because as a follower of Christ, you should be preaching the Gospel to every creature and making disciples of all men (Mark 16:15, Matthew 28:19). As you are doing this, you may need to choose different words or a different way of saying things so that those people can understand.

Most people say you shouldn't care what others think about what you are doing and how you are living your life. They think you should do your own thing and not worry about other people.

But that is really a wrong way of thinking. What you do and how you live your life affects many other people. The decisions you make don't just affect you.

Just as an example, a career decision or change isn't going to just affect you. It will affect your family and those you work around, in your previous job and in the one you are planning on going to.

You should think about others and what they are thinking, because the things you do and say will affect those around you.

I think most of the time we care too much about what others think, as far as the unnecessary things, which causes us to worry and fret, but we don't pay attention to the more important reasons why we should care what others think.

Do other people think they are going to Heaven or hell?

Do other people think about their eternal salvation?

Do other people think about a personal Savior?

What do other people think about the message I am bringing them?

Those are the kinds of questions we need to think about.

That is why we need to care about what others think.
